Paper parasol, 'Cranes and Trees'
Nikom covers this petite parasol with special Chinese paper detailed with cranes and trees, making it versatile for use either in the sun or in the rain. Beneath the paper, a handmade bamboo frame creates a sturdy structure. As a treatment for the paper, Nikom pounds persimmon fruits in a gigantic mortar with a pestle, which he leaves to ferment for a month or two. He mixes the fermented fruit with glue, which he then applies to the paper for a waterproofing effect.
