'Lion Barong,' mask
According to Nyoman Subrata, he has "always been fascinated by lions," thus the inspiration for this original representation of Barong. Carved from sono wood, the intricate image revels in menacing features and extensive symmetry. Perhaps the most beloved deity of the Balinese pantheon, Barong often descends to the earth during religious ceremonies and enters the body of a medium. The possessed person falls into a trance and performs the entrancing movements of the Barong dance. A treasured acquisition for the liberated dcor.
