Wood statuette, 'Resting Deer'
The golden deer of the Ramayana perhaps the most renowned epic of Hindu literature rests slyly in this exquisite sono wood statuette. According to the story, Rahwana, the evil ogre-king, becomes enchanted by the beauty of Sita, who lives in exile in the forest along with her husband Rama. Rahwana sends one of his knights, Marica, to tempt Sita, transforming himself into a golden deer. Captured by her curiosity, Sita asks her husband to catch the deer, but as Ramas arrow strikes the creature it transforms back into Maricas actual body. Sculpted by the talented Nyoman Karsa, this representation impresses with its sleek, smooth surfaces and refined details, such as the deers proud set of horns. A fascinating acquisition for the professional dcor.
