Wood statuette, 'Peaceful Siwaratri' (set of 3)
Inspired by the Siwaratri ceremony of Bali, Nyoman Karsa deftly carves this set of three monkey statuettes from local suar wood. One of the creatures covers its ears with its hands, so as not to hear any negative sounds, another one covers its mouth, in order to not to speak any bad words, while the third monkey covers its eyes to avoid any evil imagery. During the annual Siwaratri ceremony, the Balinese people must fast all day, beginning at 6 a.m. on the morning of the ceremony and concluding at 6 a.m. the following day. Sleep is forbidden, along with eating and drinking. People are expected to behave well, read religious texts, and perform other positive deeds. Three things are prohibited above all else during the Siwaratri ceremony: one must not hear any negative sounds, speak any bad words, or see any evil images.
